Battlestar Galactica - Season 1 - Episode 2 - "Water"

-

Full details of Battlestar Galactica, season1, episode 2 "Water" (that's SPOILERS!) can be found on the Sky One Battlestar Galactica episode guide

This episode had a sort of prologue at the start, kind of like a trailer...."Humans created them"....etc (but without a cheesy voice over thank goodness).

One thing that occurred to me was that I'm never sure when the titles actually start, the theme music starts off so low key it's a bit of a non event. Mind you anything is better than the dated naffness of the original series music. However I do like the updated Battlestar Galactica logo.

The episode starts with Lt. Sharon Valesii (Boomer) waking up somwhere on the Galactica, dripping wet, next to a bag with a detonator in it.

It's the old memory-loss story riff which can be great if done properly and I'm happy to say that this rendition was good. The initial confusion of Boomer was captured with jump cuts and energetic camera work, which I liked.

The main plot, centered around the explosion of the Galactica's water tank and the fleet's subsequent search for water, was fine although the episode as a whole felt more like a setup for future episodes. I don't necessarily mind that, I kept watching and it was entertaining and sometimes you need some groundwork for a great story arc. And of course the look and feel of the show remains superb.

Character of the episode was probably Commander Adama, who's straight talking decision making won me over. Baltar was brilliantly half insane again and the card game was fun. As the characters interact more and more I think the show can only get better.

Good stuff.
