Doctor Who - Rose
The first episode of the brand spanking new Doctor Who is entitled "Rose". I'm glad to say that with regard to the hype (of which there has been copius amounts this week), it lives up to it. More comment (with mild spoilers) after a click...
It starts with a subtle remix of the familiar theme tune, that probably sent families all around the UK scuttling to their sofas. That's one thing I must assert at the start, Doctor Who is a family drama. Russell T Davies has said that he would love to hook 8-12 year olds. Having said that, I absolutley loved it. It's pacy, it looks good and it's funny. Not camp funny, or silly funny, but witty funny, really witty funny. I laughed a lot.
Christopher Eccleston plays it brilliantly, feeding off the sparkling script. One moment jolly, and blase, the next moment deadly serious and a little bit scary. This is an actor who can portray the multi dimensional Doctor, all those paradoxes that are at the core of the character. He was great.
And Billie Piper was equally brilliant, playing Rose's dilemmas out well. A girl with a dull life bumping into a Timelord. What should she do? Go or stay? Perfectly done.
The TARDIS looked very cool. (The sounds are just as they always were).
Oh yeah, and the monsters, the Autons this episode. There's probably a whole bunch of kids who are now going to be scared of shop window dummies (== mannequins). (Come to think of it I vividly remember a dream as a kid where I was terrified of headless shop dummies...hmmm).
All in all highly enjoyable. It left a smile on my face.
Now lets sing that them tune.....
Woooohhooooooo woooo-o-oooooo
The BBC site has some stuff supporting the episode, Rose, including behind the scenes photos, photos from the episode and a 360 panorama of the inside of the TARDIS. I suppose they're minor spoilers, depending on how sensitive you are being!
