Reappraising my level of Star Wars fanhood

-

My experience of trying to win a ticket to the UK premiere of Revenge of the Sith last Friday taught me a couple of things:

(1) It's nigh on impossible to win something on a national radio station with over 7 million listeners.

(2) I know a lot more about Star Wars than your average person who thinks they are a Star Wars fan.

I never thought that I was an ultra Star Wars geek. Yes I saw all of the original trilogy in the cinema on their release. Yes I was young and it made a lasting impression. Yes Star Wars was in fact the first film I saw at a cinema. Yes I still have some of my original Star Wars figures (a bit dirty from digging trenches in the garden - that's the unseen side of a rebellion). Yes I flew to New York to see The Phantom Menace two months earlier than I could in the UK (but hey it was New York in 99, when getting into the USA was a lot less annoying). Yes I even like the prequel trilogy. Yes I like Return of the Jedi. Yes I'm excited about Revenge of the Sith. Yes I've seen all the films a lot of times. Yes I've read a lot of the books. And YES I BLOG ABOUT STAR WARS A LOT. (err...and no, no one has ever complained).

Sorry, getting a bit worked up. I'll tell you the problem. All of the people the won tickets were rubbish! They didn't know anything. Basically you had to guess whether the actor was saying a line or it was a fan. Kiwi accent, a line by Jango Fett. Hmmm let me think. A line from C3P0, it's obviously Anthony Daniels you fool! The only difficult one was General Grievous, because I haven't heard Matthew Wood speak and have only heard a second of Grievous speaking.

It was torture. Infuriating torture. And then the DJ's were being all jokey and making lame Star Wars jokes and pretending they knew about Star Wars and were fans. No they weren't. They knew nothing.

So I've come to the conclusion that excluding a portion of my online bretheren, (never 100%, have you read USENET lately?), I actually know much more about Star Wars than your average person. A lot more. And I like it.

But it doesn't win you anything.

I'll be watching the TV today for glimpses of the premiere on the news...
