Tom Coates reviews Serenity...

It's as good a film as the Lord of the Rings films at their best. All the recent Star Wars movies put together aren't fit to clean its boots. I can't think of a sci-fi film in my recent memory that can touch it, frankly.

...he liked it.

Also a review from Londonist...

Those enlightened souls who have already familiarised themselves with the show are in for a hell of a treat once this opens.

...they liked it too.

As Tom points out, currently Serenity has an IMDB rating of 9.1, which is quite good seeing as the top two rated movies of all time on there (The Godfather and The Shawshank Redemption) have a rating of 9.0

The problem with ratings like the one on IMDB though is that they're far too easily swayed by a particularly loyal fanbase.

Which of course Serenity has.

My biggest concern remains the fact that a lot of reviews are suggesting that you need (or will want) familiarity with the tv series to fully enjoy the film. That's not a good thing.

I agree.
Although selfishly I don't care too much if you need to know the TV series.
But then again I want a new series to be made so I want the film to be a success!

I might disagree. I was shown the original trailer by a friend. On that basis I tracked down a copy of the series and really got into it. Yes, admittedly having seen the series could colour my judgement, however it may be negative (expectations are very high for this film). It represents a fresher idea/view than most of the rubbish being shoveled out at the moment, so it should attract the crowds (dropping the release back helps too!!)

Well hopefully you're right. I would like nothing more than Serenity to be a seriously massive hit. And maybe once the mainstream reviewers see it and compare it to other SF films from this year the freshness you point out might be a big plus.
