Doctor Who - The Idiot's Lantern

Another episode written by Mark Gatiss, the Doctor and Rose arrive in 1950's England on the eve of Queen Elizabeth II's coronation. And weird things are happening.

Spoilers ahead...

It's the one where the television's attack! I loved the start where the Doctor rode out of the TARDIS on a scooter, him and Rose looking very groovy in their early rock'n'roll clothes, and then discovering (as usual) they were in England and too early. Made me laugh. But once again there's the feeling that they are having too good a time. In fact Russell T Davies said something about this on Doctor Who Confidential, that there is a feeling that they will have to pay for it. Foreshadowing?

As is usual with the new incarnation of Doctor Who the first half of the episode was nice and suspenseful and had atmosphere, and the second half had lots of running around.

For those not in the UK the TV monster was the legendary Maureen Lipman. Which is a joke in itself as she is usually nice and motherly. I thought that she played it really well. Also, for small kids, I think the TV sucking their faces off could be really scary! Pretty horrible really.

I also thought that the portrayal of a horrible dad who had fought in the war was great, and very relevant to today, his son giving him a lecture and saying something like "you fought in the war so I could say what I wanted to." (paraphrasing).

All in all a great episode, loved it.

Loads of stuff online as usual.
