Doctor Who - Doomsday

Is it the end of the world? Series 2 ends with a bang. Well actually LOTS of BANGS. And very good it is too.

SPOILERS AHEAD

The episode instantly improves with the ex-eastenders cast being killed off, Torchwood becoming overrun and the Daleks turning on the charm.

Daleks versus Cybermen. A Doctor Who fanboy's dream. Never before seen onscreen at the same time. There was some great dialogue between the two...

(not exactly accurate but something like...)

Cyberman : This is war.
Dalek : This isn't war it's pest control.

Cyberman : There are six million of us and only four Daleks.
Dalek : We would beat you with just one Dalek.

Dalek : You are superior to us in only one way, you're ability to die.

Very funny.
It turns out that the four Daleks were some legendary cult, they had names, they used imagination, they had remained hidden in the void after the Time War. Cool. Apparently the Doctor was fighting on the frontline of the war. The Genesis Ark, which was inside the void sphere was in fact a Timelord prison ship!(keeping up?) Leading of course to millions of Daleks streaming out of it. And then fighting all the Cybermen. Also the lead Dalek was black, looking groovy, and decided to time jump when things got sticky.

Meanwhile Rose's dad and the alternate universe crew appear. To be honest the whole voidspace explanation was a bit rubbish. The void stuff? Sucking the Daleks back into the void. Hmmm. But you know what? If I want Hard SF I'll read books. This episode was supreme entertainment. And with a lovely emotional ending.

The ending was a little contrived, but in the end only separate universes could separate Rose and the Doctor. Rose didn't die as expected, instead she's living with Mickey and her mom and dad in a different universe. Very sad. Very well done. It felt very strange to be saying goodbye to Rose, she was such an integral part of this new series of Doctor Who. She turned the Doctor from a lonely, hurt alien into something more warm and human and healed. Billie Piper has been fantastic for two years, I hope she does well elsewhere.

And, in what now is a grand tradition, a surprise at the end. A bride appears in the TARDIS, and the Christmas special 2006 is entitled "The Runaway Bride". Even more surprising was that the bride was played by Catherine Tate!

A great finale to another great Doctor Who series. Keep it coming, I love it.
