A Scanner Darkly
I should say up front that I love the book A Scanner Darkly. It has been much touted that it is the most authentic conversion of a Philip K Dick story to film, maybe, it is definitely an extremely accurate representation of the novel.
There's been a lot of hype about the rotoscoping technique used, and it was indeed quite brilliant. Once you got used to it, which took me only a few minutes, it added a nice, weird spaceyness to the film. Apart from the excellent rendition of the scramble suit, the animation often seemed to make scenery distort, items float and faces continually move. Although this sounds rubbish, it makes the film a continually interesting spectacle.
I also thought the acting was superb. Everyone perfectly cast. Although Robert Downey Junior will probably get the plaudits for his insanely paranoid portrayal, I thought Woody Harrelson was a good stoner and Keanu Reeves provided a detachment which seemed suitable as Proctor's mind became slowly fried.
If you don't know the story, I won't reveal too much. Although the focus seems to be on the drugs aspect, I personally love the reality twisting that happens, where you can't trust anything that's happening, and by the end of the film, you don't trust anyone. It's funny and sad and relevant.
Excellent all round, I thoroughly enjoyed it.
