The Dumbies - Winners

-

And the winners are...

Television : Lost
Lost saw off strong competition from Doctor Who by remaining consistently entertaining and completely bonkers. We learnt why the plane crashed, why there was a polar bear on the island, what the numbers are and then, at the start of the third series, were posed a whole new set of questions. Who are the others? It's gone all The Prisoner, and the judges love it.

Film : Children Of Men
It's bleak and scary, but Children Of Men is one of those films that haunts you. The realisation of a dystopian Britain is all too real. It's intelligent, has wonderful acting, and shows that serious SF can be created on film, and all without blockbuster special effects.

Short Story : Magic For Beginners
Words cannot say how much the judges loved Magic For Beginners. It struck a deep chord that resonated throughout the year. Truly wonderful.

Comic : DC : The New Frontier
Taking us back to a time before superheroes, but of heroes, the judges liked the intelligent story and introduction to a previously undiscovered world of DC heroes.

Book : The Confusion
Such a tricky decision. Counting Heads was a close second thanks to its deep geek SF credentials. However in the end the audacious scope of Neal Stephenson's Baroque Cycle won out: economics, pirates and politics. Of course! Great stuff.
