The Dumbies 2007 - The Winners!
And the winners are....
Books : Brasyl
In a year of great books Brasyl manages to win by being the book that the judges fell in love with. It was close, with Magic For Beginners another fall-in-love book, but more inconsistent (being an anthology). Special mention should be made to Charles Stross, whose books Glasshouse and Halting State have cracking plots and a bazillion ideas, but Brasyl is more complete: ideas, poetic, plot, atmosphere. Wonderful.
Non-Fiction Book : Brave New Words
Brave New Words is a book that will be picked up again and again and again. And for that reason it wins.
Film : Primer
There some genuine classics in this years films. Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind was a close second, with a heart warming tale of memory loss, but the sheer mind blowing time travelling plot of Primer trumps it. Genuinely brilliant Science Fiction.
Television : Lost
Once again Lost was brilliant. There was nothing about it that I would change (unlike everything else). It zoomed off at tangents, became even more crazy and then ended with a flash forward cliff-hanger. Awesome. With a definitie end date it's only going to get better too.
Comics : xkcd
It made me laugh every day. A genius geek comc strip.
Videogames : Wii Sports
You stand up, you swing the controller! Boxing! Tennis! Bowling! Nintendo on top form.
A good year.
