Love & Hate

Things that Big Dumb Object has loved and hated this week:

Loved
  • The amount of press that the announcement of a new Doctor can generate. Who'd have thought that a Science Fiction television show could generate so much interest?
  • Spook Country by William Gibson. Reading it. Loving it.
  • The promise of new Science Fiction in a new year.

Hated
  • The amount of press that the announcement of a new Doctor can generate. It gets a bit tiresome after a while.
  • Holidays ending.

Why no love for Battlestar Galactica?

Because I got bored at the end of Season 3 and stopped watching it. First season was interesting. But there was clearly no plan, and no arc, and it had said everything to be said.

"But there was clearly no plan, and no arc, and it had said everything to be said."

Your assessment is interesting. You still follow "Star Wars" and "Dr. Who." I suppose you think they have something new to say and BSG doesn't.

I think one of BSG's strengths is its character development, a quality I find lacking in most sci-fi and under appreciated by most sci-fi audiences.

Also, your assessment seems ironic after the first half of season 4 in which one plot line after another is getting resolved.

Hey, you're not required to like BSG. I just wanted to understand why.

Don't get me wrong, I really did love the first season, and I liked the second season a lot. But the third season let me down, I had that feeling that they were floundering for a longer plot, and the cylons actions just seemed illogical. And that after promising that they "had a plan". Yes, I liked the characterisation too, but again I felt they were repeating themselves after a while. It no longer felt fresh.

However you can't compare my love for Star Wars and watching Doctor Who in direct comparison to BSG. BSG is about the characters and the plot, that was what I watched it for. Doctor Who I watch because it's fun, yes it's sometimes silly, but that's part of the deal, and sometimes it's genius. Star Wars was the first film I saw at the cinema, and therefore I have unconditional love for it :-)

Maybe I should give Season 4 a chance? Don't know. (Feel like I should so at least I can make an informed opinion !)
